In opposition, competition, and/or cooperation with activists, marketers, and storytellers, scientists make use of pop culture. The scientists want to keep us interested and supportive as the stakes are huge. Government funding for nanotechnology is essential to their work and can amount to billions of dollars in annual funding. In the US alone, the proposed 2009 (FY) budget was $1.5B US for nanotechnology research. (It is interesting to contrast the US federal budget amount with a July 2008 IBM announcement of their new $1.5B US nanotechnology investment in New York state.) China, Japan, Russia, US, UK, and other governments are all pouring significant funds into the research. Government funding tends to dry up when the public turns against a field of inquiry such as biotechnology. Plus there's one other thing, scientists are humans too. They write poetry, make art, play games, and create whimsical objects just for the fun of it.
